The 72 Kabbalistic Angels and Their Principles

The Lenain System of the Kabbalistic Angels

While many modern presentations of the Kabbalistic Angels focus primarily on dates of birth, earlier traditions describe a far more precise and structured system of angelic governance. One of the clearest formulations of this structure appears in the work attributed to Lenain, which organises the 72 Names of the Shem ha-Mephorash according to degrees of the zodiac, decanic divisions, and specific periods of time.

In this system, each angel is not merely associated with a calendar date, but with:

  • a five-degree segment of the zodiac,
  • a specific daily time rulership of approximately twenty minutes,
  • and a principle of influence that operates in harmony with celestial cycles.

The angel is therefore understood not as a personal entity that intervenes at will, but as a cosmic function — a regulating intelligence through which certain qualities of order, movement, and consciousness become accessible at defined moments in time.

This approach shifts the practitioner’s role. Rather than “calling” an angel, one learns to attune to an influence that is already present, governed by rhythm and structure rather than desire.

Birth Angels in the Lenain Tradition

In the Lenain system, each individual is associated with a birth angel based on the position of the Sun within a specific five-degree arc of the zodiac at the moment of birth. This association is symbolic rather than deterministic. The birth angel represents a dominant formative principle, not a fixed destiny.

Knowing one’s birth angel offers:

  • a symbolic framework for self-observation
  • insight into recurring themes of experience
  • a language through which inner tendencies may be recognised and refined

It does not replace personal responsibility, nor does it predict events.

The Origin of the 72 Angels

The 72 Angels presented in this system are not understood as independent deities or personal spirits. They are derived from the Shem HaMephorash, a Kabbalistic structure formed from seventy-two three-letter Names extracted from the Hebrew text of Exodus (14:19–21).

In classical Kabbalah, these seventy-two Names are regarded as expressions of the Divine Name, or attributes of divine action rather than separate beings. The angels associated with them represent ordered principles through which these Names are contemplated in relation to time, zodiacal degrees, and human experience.

Within the Lenain system, each of these Names is linked to a specific segment of the zodiac and a precise twenty-minute period of the day. The angelic names serve as symbolic references that allow the practitioner to orient attention toward these divine attributes, rather than as objects of worship or petition.

Daily Angelic Time Rulerships & Suggested Practices During Your Angelic Hour

A defining feature of the Lenain system is the attribution of precise daily time windows to each of the 72 angels. Each angel governs a period of approximately twenty minutes, recurring cyclically throughout the year.

These time rulerships form the basis for traditional contemplative practice:

  • brief periods of silence
  • lighting a candle
  • recitation or meditation
  • symbolic offering, such as a glass of water

The purpose of observing these times is not petition, but alignment — an intentional pause that allows the practitioner to synchronise attention with a specific quality of order.

A Simple Candle and Water Practice

Once the corresponding angel and time period have been identified, the following practice may be observed. It is intentionally minimal and should be approached with calm attention rather than expectation.

What You Will Need

  • One plain white candle on a candle holder.
  • One clear glass of fresh water
  • A quiet space, free from interruptions

How to Proceed

At the appointed time, place the candle on the candle holder and the glass of water in front of you. (If you don’t have a candle holder, a simple ceramic or glass dish will do.) Light the candle at the beginning of the twenty-minute period. Sit comfortably, with your attention gently focused.

There is no requirement to recite invocations or requests. The practice consists primarily of silence and presence. If desired, the angel’s name may be contemplated inwardly, without repetition or vocalisation.

Remain still for as much of the time window as is comfortable. The full twenty minutes need not be observed, especially at the beginning. What matters is regularity and sincerity, not duration.

At the end of the period, extinguish the candle quietly. The water may be left for a short time and then returned to nature or consumed mindfully.

Purpose of the Practice

This practice is not intended to compel action or produce immediate results. Its function is attunement — an intentional pause that allows the practitioner to align attention with a specific symbolic quality governed by time.

With continuity, this simple act becomes a discipline of observation, restraint, and awareness.

The value of this practice lies not in what is asked, but in what is learned through attention.

Author’s Note: My Thoughts on the 72 Angels

I grew up in an environment where spiritual and symbolic traditions were treated as part of life, not as curiosities. Across both sides of my family, there was a quiet familiarity with religious devotion, folk practices, and esoteric study — often existing side by side without contradiction.

There were elders known for healing practices, family members devoted to Catholicism who also worked with popular forms of sacred magic, and others whose interests ranged from numerology and symbolic systems to Afro-Brazilian spiritual traditions. On my maternal side, there was also a gentler, more domestic expression of this heritage — the charms and popular devotional practices commonly found in households, alongside New Age publications that introduced symbolic and metaphysical ideas in an accessible form. Because of this, I grew up with access to books, conversations, and practices that most people only encounter much later in life, if at all.

At the age of thirteen, I encountered Kabbalah for the first time through a book about Kabbalistic Angels. That book became a companion. I learned to observe the days and times associated with the angels, to light a candle, to place a glass of water, and to sit in silence during those twenty minutes of alignment. I checked the angels of my sisters, my best friend, and those close to me — not as a ritual of asking, but as an act of attention. Over time, my studies expanded into different mythological, religious, and esoteric systems, yet the angelic framework remained a constant language of order, rhythm, and meaning.

When I first discovered the 72 Kabbalistic angels, I was struck by something simple but profound: nearly every religion acknowledges the existence of angels. Could it be that these luminous beings really do appear, in one form or another, to guide humanity? Many Kabbalists see the 72 angels as expressions or “names” of the divine, each carrying a unique vibration, a subtle reflection of the infinite. It made me wonder how many people across history have felt their presence, or seen them, even if they didn’t know their name.

And then there’s a more personal thought I can’t shake: if I were to meet my Kabbalistic Angel at the precise hour of its influence, what would I do? At that time, honestly, I thought that I would probably freeze. Maybe even make a bee-line straight to my room’s exit door! The thought of such a direct encounter is equal parts thrilling and terrifying.

This tool isn’t about guaranteeing visions or mystical encounters, but it’s an invitation—a gentle nudge to observe the rhythms of your life, connect with these archetypal energies, and maybe, just maybe, feel a little closer to something greater.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kabbalistic Angel?

In the Kabbalistic tradition, the 72 Angels — also known as the Names of the Shem HaMephorash — represent symbolic principles derived from sacred textual structures and zodiacal divisions. Each angel governs a specific segment of time and degree of the zodiac, expressing a distinct quality of order, consciousness, or function. These angels are not conceived as separate beings, but as symbolic expressions derived from the seventy-two Names of the Divine.

How do I find my angel?

Enter your birth date in the calculator to discover your Kabbalistic angel, its zodiac sign, degree, and suggested angelic hour.

What are the 72 angels?

The 72 angels are the 72 names or expressions of God in Kabbalah, each with a specific principle and influence over human life.

How is my Kabbalistic Angel calculated?

In the Lenain system, the ruling angel is determined by the zodiac sign and the specific degrees occupied at birth. Each zodiac sign is divided into six segments of five degrees, each ruled by one angel. This page uses that degree-based structure rather than simplified day-count methods.

Is my Kabbalistic Angel the same as my “angel number”?

Not exactly. Modern “angel numbers” usually refer to repeating numerical patterns (such as 111 or 444). In traditional Kabbalah, angel numbers refer to the fixed order of the 72 Names, numbered from 1 to 72. This page uses the traditional numbering system.

What is the Lenain system?

The Lenain system is a structured angelological framework that associates the 72 Angels with zodiac degrees and precise time divisions. It preserves a more technical and older approach than many modern devotional adaptations.

Do I need to pray or make requests to my angel?

No. Traditional practices emphasise attention, timing, and inner alignment rather than requests or petitions. Silence and observation are considered sufficient.

Why does each angel have a specific time period?

Each angel governs a recurring twenty-minute segment within the daily cycle. These time divisions reflect the relationship between celestial order and temporal rhythm, reinforcing the importance of precision and regularity.

Can I work with more than one angel?

While a birth angel represents a primary reference point, the system itself is cyclical. Different angels may be contemplated according to time, period, or symbolic relevance.
